Up early. Say 5:00 am. Make coffee. Make breakfast. Which might be yogurt with banana, an orange, a handful of almonds (which I slice), honey, cinnamon powder. A glass of sparkling cherry water. After breakfast look out living room window. Then more coffee. After coffee is made go to computer. Open email. Reply to a few emails. Check social media. Sigh. Regret looking at social media. Turn on NPR on my iPhone. Pull up manuscript was working on yesterday. Review manuscript. Start making edits to manuscript. Continue making edits. Continue making edits. Continue making edits. Change a title. Continue making edits. Write a bit. Write a bit. Write a bit. Receive call from writing partner K. who lives in San Francisco. Discuss current writing projects. Discuss politics, the state of poetry, old novels, current comedy, people we know, music, money, health. Return to manuscript. Sit staring at manuscript the editing edge gone. Get up. Wander about house. Return to computer. Return to manuscript. Look at what I have done the last three hours. Print out revised poems. Put pages in folder on desk. Think about stopping for the morning. Almost 10am . Think about what got done, what didn’t. Satisfied. Stop writing for day. Lunch Rest of day taken up by chores, exercise, social activities. Later make dinner. Clean up after. Long walk. Evening reading & music. Maybe a phone call. Asleep usually between 10-11:30pm. In the greenhouse manure on rose beds. I miss the attic.
